Overview
IT managed services providers (MSPs) act as outsourced IT departments for businesses, typically managing clients' day-to-day technology infrastructure under recurring monthly contracts. Services commonly include IT helpdesk and technical support, managed cloud and server hosting, Microsoft 365 and cloud management, network monitoring, data backup and disaster recovery, cybersecurity, device management, software licensing and IT infrastructure maintenance. Some MSPs operate their own hosting infrastructure or data-centre capacity, while others manage client environments hosted through third-party cloud platforms. More specialised providers may also offer private cloud hosting, virtual desktops, managed networks, communications and cybersecurity services. MSPs typically attract 4×–7× EBITDA multiples, supported by predictable recurring revenue and relatively high customer switching costs once a provider is embedded within a client's IT environment. Businesses with a high proportion of contracted recurring revenue, diversified SME client bases, strong cybersecurity and cloud capabilities, and efficient, scalable service delivery tend to trade towards the upper end. Engineer utilisation, customer retention, recurring revenue as a percentage of total revenue, contract length and revenue per employee are important valuation considerations. MSPs with significant one-off hardware sales or project-based IT work generally command lower multiples than businesses built predominantly around recurring managed-service, hosting and support contracts.
